How to Properly Place an E-Collar (Elizabethan Collar) on Your Dog or Cat
After a surgery or dental procedure, your pet may be sent home with an e-collar, also known as an Elizabethan collar or “cone.” This protective collar prevents your pet from licking or scratching at incisions, sutures, or sensitive areas while they heal. In this guide, Registered Veterinary Technician Ashley from Green Valley Veterinary Care walks you through how to properly place both soft and hard e-collars on your pet.
When Is an E-Collar Needed for my pet?
E-collars are commonly used after procedures such as:
- Spay or neuter surgeries
- Mass removals
- Dental cleanings or tooth extractions
- Skin conditions or hot spots
- Any situation where your pet might lick or bite at a healing area
In this case, Squibby the patient had a professional dental cleaning and tooth extractions, and an e-collar is being used to prevent him from rubbing his face and damaging his sutures.
Types of E-Collars for Pets
Green Valley Veterinary Care offers two main types of e-collars:
- Soft e-collar: Flexible, fabric-like material with a drawstring-style adjustment.
- Hard plastic e-collar: Rigid cone with adjustable sizing holes and snap closures.
How to Fit a Soft E-Collar
- Place the soft e-collar gently over your pet’s head.
- Adjust the fit using the elastic cord to ensure a secure hold.
- Make sure your pet’s nose does not extend past the edge of the cone. If it does, they may still be able to reach the affected area.
- Check the tightness: You should be able to comfortably slide two fingers underneath the collar to ensure it’s snug but not too tight.
How to Fit a Hard Plastic E-Collar
- Size the collar first before snapping it closed. Wrap the collar around your pet’s neck to find the best fit.
- Use the built-in holes and plastic prongs to secure the collar in place. Listen for the “click” to confirm it’s snapped correctly.
- Just like with the soft collar, ensure you can fit two fingers underneath to confirm proper fit.
- Double check that the cone extends far enough to prevent your pet from reaching their mouth or incision sites.
Why Proper Fit of E-Collars Matters
A properly fitted e-collar is essential for healing. If the collar is too loose, your pet can slip it off or still reach the area. If it’s too tight, it can cause discomfort or even restrict breathing. Always check the fit and monitor your pet for signs of irritation or distress!
