Dog Emergency and Urgent Care at Green Valley Veterinary Care

Dr. Lori Mathews

How do I know if my dog is experiencing a real emergency or something that needs to be seen urgently?

Real pet emergencies are life-threatening events, such as difficulty breathing, inability to breathe, a large swollen abdomen that's painful, trauma like being hit by a car, blood loss, loss of consciousness, or a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes. These situations are true emergencies. Urgent care needs, where your pet should be seen within 24 hours, include lameness (difficulty walking), really itchy skin, a painful ear infection, some vomiting and diarrhea but still with good energy, or a bleeding toenail. These are urgent needs that cannot wait until next week.

What are the differences between an emergency vet and an urgent care facility?

Emergency care typically has access 24/7, meaning they are open every day and every hour of every year. An urgent care veterinarian, like the services we provide at Green Valley Veterinary Care, operates from 8:00 to 5:00 to cover your pet's urgent needs. We offer same-day appointments for urgent needs and provide emergency care during our business hours. When we are not available, emergency veterinarians are there to meet your needs.

What should I expect when I bring my dog to an emergency or urgent visit?

For an emergency or urgent visit, the initial step is to triage your pet if an emergency is suspected. This involves a quick assessment by nursing staff or doctors to ensure life-saving measures are not needed immediately. In an emergency, expect a quick triage by the medical staff. For an urgent visit, you will be placed in a room, and a veterinarian and a nurse will attend to your pet in an organized manner. If it's an emergency, your pet might be taken to the back where there is access to oxygen if required.
