Staying on Top of Your Dog's Health Care with Green Valley Veterinary Care

Dr. Lori Mathews

How can I ask my veterinarian for a preventative care plan for my dog?

That is a great question! We should be seeing your dog at least once a year for a physical exam, and we can talk about preventative care at that time. However, a perfect time to start discussing preventative care is at your first puppy visit. Asking us things and questions about preventative care at those two appointment times would be a great way to start the conversation. In terms of preventative care, we can also talk about health insurance in dogs, as well as the wellness plans that we offer here at Green Valley Veterinary Care.

What actions should be a part of my dog's preventative care routine at home and during their veterinary exam?

At home, for preventative medicine, you should focus on keeping your pet at a healthy weight, brushing their teeth, keeping them well exercised, maintaining them on heartworm prevention and flea and tick control, and feeding them a healthy diet. These are things that you can be doing at home as preventative healthcare for your dog. In the office, we would routinely screen for infectious diseases like heartworm testing, conduct fecal testing for intestinal parasites, keep your pet up to date on required vaccines, and perform good physical exams. Trying to get ahead of a problem with a good physical exam, instead of waiting for them to develop, is all part of preventative care.

What are the benefits of a preventative care routine for dogs?

The benefits include longevity and also saving you money. By focusing on preventing infectious diseases, obesity, or dental disease in our patients, we can help extend your dog's life while saving you money in the long run. Looking at preventative care would also involve discussing wellness plans or options that help you more easily and financially care for your pet in terms of preventative care or preventing diseases.
