Glucose monitoring for pets
Hi, I'm Dr. Matthews at Green Valley Veterinary Care.
What might you do if a pet is diagnosed with diabetes?
If your pet gets diagnosed with diabetes, one thing that we might do to help your pet is apply something called a Freestyle Libre, which is a monitoring device to where you can check your pet's blood glucose at home.

Can you walk us through the application process?
My registered veterinary technician, Haley, is helping me today apply the sensor to one of our cat patients. One, two, three. Good job. You did it. Thank you.
How can using a sensor at home benefit pet owners?
Using a sensor at home can help us regulate your pet's blood glucose. In our next video, we're going to show you how to use the sensor reader. So you can perform a blood glucose curve on your cat or dog.

How would you perform a blood glucose curve on your pet?
How you would perform this is you would record a glucose reading before administering food and insulin, and then you'll record a glucose reading every two hours for us in a journal. Then, you will send the information to us so we can help interpret if your animal needs an adjustment on their insulin volume.
What did you do today regarding a Freestyle Libre application?
What we did today was we applied a Freestyle Libre to one of our patients so we can monitor his diabetes at home, and we'd like to show you what that looks like.
How does the Freestyle Libre work on pets?
So with a Freestyle Libre, it's a little disc that could be on the back of their neck or on their shoulder. With the sensor, all you have to do is be within 30 feet of your pet, and the sensor will automatically take readings for you.
