The Cat "Purrito"
Wrap Up Your Cat For Easy Medication Administration
Hi! I'm Haley, a registered veterinary technician here at Green Valley Veterinary Care. Today, we’re going to show you how to safely wrap your cat to help with administering treatments, cleaning ears, or giving medications at home. This is Ace, and he’s going to help us demonstrate!
Why Wrap Your Cat?
Wrapping your cat in a towel—what we like to call a "purrito"—helps keep them secure and calm while you administer medications or treatments.
What You’ll Need
- A large, soft towel
- A flat surface
- Patience—cats don’t always cooperate!
Step-by-Step Guide to Wrapping Your Cat
1. Prepare the Towel
Lay the towel flat on a surface like a table or countertop.
2. Position Your Cat
Place your cat in the middle of the towel. Be patient—they might wiggle or resist at first!
3. Secure Their Legs
Gently apply light pressure to your cat’s shoulder blades to keep them from escaping. Then, stretch their legs out slightly.
4. Wrap the First Side
Tuck in their front paws (or "toe beans"), then fold one side of the towel over them and hold it in place.
5. Wrap the Other Side
Now, fold the other side over, snugly wrapping them up like a burrito. Even if their tail flicks, they might still be purring—cats can give mixed signals!
What Can You Do Once Your Cat is Wrapped?
- Check their eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and teeth
- Administer ear treatments or medications
- Give oral medications safely
If you have a second person to help, one person can hold the cat securely while the other administers the treatment.
And that's how you burrito a cat! This method keeps your cat safe and secure while making it easier for you to provide care at home.
