Dental health care is very important for our pets. At Green Valley Veterinary Care, we provide the best dental care for dogs and cats using the latest technology available to ensure safety for pets and excellence in the treatment of dental disease.

We care for your furry families’ teeth by placing them under anesthesia to perform a dental cleaning and examination. Before this, we will run lab work to make sure your pet is healthy. Your pet will also have an IV catheter placed. Once under anesthesia, a full set of oral radiographs is taken to assess disease presence. Without radiographs, more than 50% of the tooth is not being examined.

Next, your pet’s teeth are cleaned. A dental cleaning includes scaling (to remove dental plaque and tartar) and polishing, similar to the process used on your teeth during your regular dental cleanings.

Lastly, Dr. Mathews will probe the gumline of your pet looking for periodontal pockets and asses the radiographs for the necessity of extractions. If extractions are needed, we use local anesthesia in the mouth of your pet to ensure their comfort while recovering. Dr. Mathews also utilizes oral surgery techniques that may result in sutures in your pet’s gums. These are not removed. They will dissolve over time.

Without dental care, periodontal disease will occur. It is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats. Early detection is key to preventing, as advanced dental periodontal disease can cause pain and infection in your pet.

The presence of plaque under the gum line can be easily removed with a dental cleaning. Left behind, it will change to tartar. This leads to infection and damage to the bone and ligament that hold teeth in place.
